Participation Key to Successful Great Race

Issue date: 2/26/04 Section: Opinion
Ahhh, the treasure of WNMU; traditional teams like TKB, the long push up 'Cardiac,' the madness of the air band competition, the ever-present 'athlete' teams and the muddy waters of 'The Pit.' Fierce competition and trash-talking can only be soothed each evening by the free flowing nectar of the gods. The Great Race, held each spring semester, is an event that should not be missed, nor easily forgotten (at least most of it)!
What is it that makes the Great Race so great? Is it the hearty student participation, the planning by the Activities Committee and the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the labor provided by the Maintenance Office and Campus Police, or the contributions of the many businesses in the community? Each of these groups is incredibly important, but by and large the Great Race is an event for the students and should cater to the wants and desires of the students. As students we should participate in The Great Race: encourage businesses to make contributions, share ideas with the Activities Committee and Maria Dominguez-Rolfe, and most importantly be on a team! A team provides the means to show off your skills, party with the best of them and get free food.
But should we fear the loss of this great tradition? Will the desires of the administration eventually cause the ruination of our most treasured custom? During the past few years of Great Race members of the administration have tried and in some cases succeeded in going against the will of the students. Do we want to lose this student-oriented event to the gripping hands of the administration? A student dictated Great Race can still occur! Let your voices be heard: become a team captain, talk to a member of the Activities Committee or share your opinions in The Mustang. Whatever you do, fight for your team because the trash-talking never ends.
The Great Race is a perfect place to make friends and enemies. So join a team or start your own and don't forget to push hard and party even harder. Beware the professors who still have class during this eventful week, especially those who give tests, just make arrangements ahead of time. Each of us has stories of our own about Great Race, but the never-ending keg has yet to be rivaled. Don't forget to drink... dehydration can be the pits! Finally, Walt Nickerson, we will miss you and the dedicated service to drunken stupor that you provided over the past ten or so years!
