This weekend the WNMU Softball team traveled to Dallas, Texas to participate in the 2004 Lead-Off Classic. The Mustangs, coming off convincing wins over Highlands and Eastern New Mexico, came into the tournament as one of the top competitors.
On the first day, the Mustangs faced Washburn University of Topeka, Kansas, and Texas A&M-Kingsville, and managed to go 1-2 on the day. In the first game, the Mustangs managed to shut-out Washburn, with excellent pitching by Angela Slaugh, who threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts. The second game was a different story, with the Mustangs falling to Texas A&M-Kingsville by a score of 0-2.
On Saturday, the Mustangs found the same luck of the first day, splitting their two games with one win and one loss. The first team to fall to the Mustangs was Panhandle State of Oklahoma. Once again, a brilliant performance by Slaugh on the mound led to another Western shutout, and a 5-0 win. However, the second game proved to be too much for the Mustangs. They dropped the second game to a tough St. Mary's team out of Texas.
On Sunday, in their final game of the tournament, Western rolled over Incarnate Word University to earn the third spot in the tournament. The Mustangs' tough-nosed defense is what held UIW to zero points, and gave WNMU the third place victory.
Western Softball will next face Montana State-Billings at home on March 12-13. So come out and support your winning Mustang softball team, as they face a tough Montana State-Billings squad.
