Avelino Maestas

Issue date: 5/6/04 Section: ASWNMU
On Saturday and Sunday, April 24-25, the Associated Students of New Mexico held their Annual Spring Conference. Representatives from the student governments of all six 4-year institutions attended the meeting. Major items on the agenda included a presentation by the New Mexico Lottery, the Governor's Task Force on Higher Education, the New Voters Project, and election of officers.

Lance Ross, Communications Manager for the NM Lottery, gave a presentation on the Lottery Success Scholarship. He said that through Spring 2003 the NM Lottery has awarded 27,398 Success Scholarships to New Mexico students. Of those recipients, some 293 students have attended WNMU.

In addition, he presented figures from the Commission on Higher Education (CHE), which showed a projected decrease in the funds available for Success Scholarships. According to these projections, the Lottery Scholarship will begin spending more money than it makes in ten years.

ASNM discussed several aspects of the Lottery Scholarship program, including funding and proposed changes. Robert Cornelius, Director of the Associated Students of New Mexico, issued a statement after the conference: "For the past several years, ASNM has worked hard with the CHE, NM Lottery Office, and the NM State Legislature to make sure that the Lottery Success Scholarship stays intact and continues to assist NM high school graduates in their pursuit of a higher level of education."

"This past legislative session brought bills forth, as well as a proposal by Governor Richardson, to change the make-up of the Lottery Success Scholarship. ASNM lobbied hard on behalf of the students and were successful in maintaining the current status of the Lottery Success Scholarship."

Discussion on the Lottery Success program was accompanied by a presentation on the Commission on Higher Education and the Governor's Task Force on Higher Education. This Task Force was created by Executive Order 2004-012 on March 19, and is composed of thirty members from throughout the state. The executive order states that the task force was established, "for the purpose of developing and recommending to the Governor a framework and strategy for a fully integrated and articulated system of higher education in New Mexico."
