Western New Mexico University has partnered with the Southwest Solid Waste Authority (SSWA) to offer a recycling program on campus. The program, a campaign pledge of ASWNMU President Jasmine Fallstich, was negotiated during the summer. Fallstich met with SSWA Director Kariann Sukulsky and Facilities Maintenance Director Henry Sanchez.

Last week, representatives from the SSWA delivered fifty recycling containers to the Physical Plant. The majority of these containers will be placed near copy machines on campus, while others will be available by department request. In addition, SSWA will provide larger site containers to store the materials collected on campus until the Authority can collect them.

White paper, newsprint, and cardboard are the items currently being recycled around campus. There are no plans to recycle glass or plastic bottles. A special arrangement for recycling metals, like tin and aluminum, has been worked out for the Mustang Dining Hall.

Fallstich said the program was something she felt the university should pursue. Ultimately she hopes to save Facilities money, by reducing the amount of waste transported to the landfill for burial.

"I hope that students, faculty, staff and administrators participate in this initative because of the positive impact it will have on the university and the community."

For more information on the recycling program please contact Jasmine Fallstich in the office of the Associated Students, ext. 6113.
