SLANDERING ASWNMU
Dear Editor,
It is a sad day when those for a union at Western New Mexico University have to take out a slanderous ad in the local newspaper. I have no problem with the staff forming a union at Western New Mexico University, but I do have a problem with the methods these personnel have taken. According the union representative, who came and spoke before us at our ASWNMU senate meeting, the "staff senate is put there by the administration." This is an untrue statement made in order for us [ASWNMU Senate] to move to their favor. The staff senate is an elected position just as we as ASWNMU Senators are elected. I know several of the staff senators and have spoken to them about how they are "put there."
The faculty senate voted to support the union, yet the ad that was taken out in the Silver City Daily Press basically was against the faculty senate. How are you going to go against someone who said that they would support you?
THIS IS NOT A STUDENT ISSUE. This is a staff issue. Yet I know I will hear, "How is this not a student issue? We are also students." That is true, BUT YOU ARE ALSO EMPLOYED AS STAFF AT WESTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY. You get a tuition waiver to go to school here. That is one of the many benefits that you receive from this fine Institution.
You are in support of the removal of Dr. Counts. Dr. Counts has more courage, devotion to duty, and honor than what you are showing now. I have more respect for a man who served our great country as an officer in the United States Army as well as being a West Point Graduate than someone who would stoop to a level that makes me feel nothing but angst and bitterness.
Those for the union say that a card check is the best way to go. They also said that an election would cost too much and they fear repercussions from the administration of Western New Mexico University. To me, this makes no sense at all. If one were to have a card check, wouldn't people's names be written down on a list? Wouldn't the easiest way for "the administration" to give "repercussions" be through a list of names? Wouldn't this also be the easiest way for a "fraudulent" means of obtaining a union? A card check seems like it would be very easy to "add" names to the list. Our country was founded on Democratic principles. The main principle was that of an election by secret ballot. It is only with a secret ballot election that the fate of this union issue should and WILL be decided. If it is meant to be, then the masses from the staff will vote for a union. Yet, if the majority of the staff is not for a union, well then it was never meant to be.
