Dallas marked the most recent stop for both the WNMU men's and women's tennis teams as their spring season gets underway. A two day meet saw the Mustangs take on UT Dallas, Dallas Baptist and East Central University in less than perfect conditions. "The high was about 40 degrees, with gusts of wind between 20-30 miles per hour," Coach Reggie Cajayon told The Mustang. "We certainly have not seen many days like that here in Silver City this semester, yet!"
Neither team made a dream start to the '06 season, however much was taken from the meet. "We showed a good competitive spirit throughout the weekend, and have made noticeable progress since the off season," Coach Cajayon commented. "However, we do need to improve on our doubles performances, on both teams."
Unfortunately the women's team were at a disadvantage from the beginning. With only five players on line up, they are presently one short of a full team. A gritty performance was put on nonetheless, and points were put on the board for the Mustangs despite this setback.
Noticeable performances came from men's team member Renato Varella, and women's team member Karina Soares. Both players put on impressive performances, making them Athletes of the Issue.

RENATO VARELLA

Finding himself a long way from home, this Brazilian Junior excelled at the recent Texas meet, going undefeated in singles all weekend. He won every match in straight sets, and as the oldest classman on the team, seems to be setting an impressive example and leading the team forward in the right direction.

KARINA SOARES

There must be something in Brazilian water, as this Sao Paulo native has been excelling on the women's team too, winning singles matches against Dallas Baptist (7-5,6-4) and against UT Dallas (6-0,6-1). Soares was also the only player on the team to win a weekend doubles match. Along with partner Nadia Nunez, they defeated UT Dallas 8-4.

On behalf of The Mustang, congratulations to both players and good luck for the forthcoming season - Keep up the good work!
