Have you found the wisdom of those around you?

It is very rare that one actually examines their surroundings. We are strangers in our own environments. That is especially true here at WNMU. Because we live in a small mining town in the southwest corner of the United States, we tend to underestimate the diversity to be found in the wide array of people around town or just around campus for that matter. A place is what you make of it. By taking a closer look at people around campus, I have discovered a lot of interesting things and enlightened myself in the process.
Eddy Gaudet is an older gentleman I met around campus reading. I also saw him at the coffee shop I work at, Javelina. Eddy will help us close up the shop and keep an eye on us because the bar is so close. Eddy is by far one of the most pure-hearted and most interesting people I've ever met. He was more than willing to talk to me and is more then obliged to do so for other people.
Eddy was born in New Orleans and is of French and Cajun descent. He went from one high school to another as an adolescent, and finally dropped out in tenth grade to pursue a career in boxing. Eddy practiced as a pro boxer for several years in New Orleans. He grew tired of the career and wanted to travel the world, so he got a job on a trading ship in his twenties. For several years, Eddy jumped from ship to ship traveling to places all over the world: Europe, Africa, Brazil, India, and Asia just to name a few. He would steer the ship, work in the kitchen, and held several other jobs around the ships.
After his experience on trade ships, Eddy became involved in the early hippie revolution. He was opposed to Nixon. He felt that Nixon was a professional liar among other politicians in the U.S. and considers himself a Revolutionary Extremist. However, don't be confused by the label, Eddy considers himself so because of the political views that are present in the running of America. Eddy stated he was a bit of a misfit at this time and was into drugs and had a common law wife of 10 years. "I graduated from a drug addict to a heart addict," as he puts it. Eddy realized his poor lifestyle and changed his ways, moving back to what he considers one of the most beautiful places on earth, the Gila Wilderness. Eddy lives a simple and natural life and is "helping people in a real way."

Small world. I write from Kyoto (Japan). Eddy Gaudet was an erstwhile sparring partner at the New Orleans Athletic Club. Please give him my regards.
Post-script: You suggest that we should put our "ideals aside. (Continued…)
