SILVER CITY--Western New Mexico University students Eric Kennedy, 21, of Silver City, a senior majoring in forestry/wildlife and Salvador Puentes, age 23, of Albuquerque, a senior also majoring in forestry/wildlife were involved in a fatal automobile accident overnight at Alabama Street and Highway 180.

Also in the vehicle was WNMU student Michael Epperson, 21, a junior from Pinos Altos. He was injured in the accident and was released from Gila Regional Medical Center this morning.

"We grieve over the loss of our students and on behalf of the entire WNMU community, I express both profound sadness over their death and deepest sympathy to their family and friends," said WNMU President John E. Counts.

President Counts has ordered the flags at the WNMU campus be lowered to half-staff through next week in honor of the students.
