WNMU Has Suffered a Great Loss

SILVER CITY--Western New Mexico University students Eric Kennedy, 21, of Silver City, a senior majoring in forestry/wildlife and Salvador Puentes, age 23, of Albuquerque, a senior also majoring in forestry/wildlife were involved in a fatal automobile accident overnight at Alabama Street and Highway 180.
Also in the vehicle was WNMU student Michael Epperson, 21, a junior from Pinos Altos. He was injured in the accident and was released from Gila Regional Medical Center this morning.
"We grieve over the loss of our students and on behalf of the entire WNMU community, I express both profound sadness over their death and deepest sympathy to their family and friends," said WNMU President John E. Counts.
President Counts has ordered the flags at the WNMU campus be lowered to half-staff through next week in honor of the students.
Epperson and Kennedy are both former members of the WNMU Mustang football team.
Counseling services are available through WNMU Academic Support Services Counselor/Advisor Deb Cosper-Hughs at 538-6267 and Dr. John Bourdette, Chemical Dependency Professor, at 538-6217.

I'd like to express my condolences to the Puentes Family and Friends of Sal and Eric. My son played ball with Sal in little league...His Grand-dad coached us all growing up and I want to express my sympathy to Mike and his Wife and Children. (Continued…)

Words can't even say how much my heart goes out to the family. Sara and Chava were like parents to me and I can't express how much of a difference they made in my life. (Continued…)
