Mustangs Score First Win!

Joy Barrett

Issue date: 9/28/07 Section: Sports
After coming back from a loss to Mesa State College, the Mustangs were determined to get a win for the home team at the game Saturday against the Mountaineers. As fans approached the field, excitement was mounting with the new rhythmic sounds of the Drumline. This seemed to get everyone in the mood for some football. In the first quarter the point lead may have been the Mountaineers 7 - Mustangs 3 but the effort of Rod Windsor for WNMU making a 50+ yard catch put the Mustangs at the three yard line. Under a minute left of play in the first quarter the score was tied 10-10!
In the 2nd quarter, Mustangs came out charging with Richard Deems making a fantastic tackle. The next play, WNMU's Christian Serena recovered a Mountaineer fumble. Mustangs took charge with receiver, Carlos Miranda, catching a pass in heavy traffic. WNMU's Jeff Polley got sacked prior to dropping the ball. Tides seem to turn when a 2-point safety brought the score to Mountaineers 12 - Mustangs 10. The quarter back for WNMU tried to get out of the pocket to evade the Mountaineers defensive line. The Mountaineers', Daniel Pennington, retrieves a fumble and runs for the end zone, but quarterback, Jeff Polley, of the Mustangs brought him down on the six yard line. The defensive line turned out an impressive hold, forcing the Mountaineers to kick a field goal bringing the score to Mountaineers 15 - Mustangs 10. WNMU struck back with Latron Hickson intercepting Western's throw to run 53 yards for a Touchdown! The last play of the half Western throws a 52-yard pass for a touchdown. At the end of the half the score was Mountaineers 22- Mustangs 17.
Fans were nervous as the game was proving to be a real nail-bitter. A former player for the Mustangs, student Fenell Davis, was charging up the Mustangs fans with his chants of "Defense, Defense." Davis said, "I am here to support the team and get the fans riled up to support the defensive line." The Mustangs continued to stay on the heels of the Mountaineers as the score went in favor of the Mountaineers 29, Mustangs 24. Then, as everyone was holding their breath in the stands, WNMU's Rod Windsor ran for a 74-yard play into the end-zone, Touchdown Mustangs! This put WNMU on top 31-29. A nice quarterback sack, by Christian Serena, ended the quarter.
